For
fans of the Hyborian Age, 1992 saw the release of Conan the
Adventurer, an animated take on the legendary barbarian
created by Robert E. Howard. Not surprisingly, the
made-for-television series concentrated on the warrior's
heroic and honorable traits, and eschewed any of the roguish
qualities that were part and parcel to the character's makeup
in the written stories.
Conan's adventurous origins lay
in his past, when the leader of the religious Snake Cult,
Wrath-Amon used a spell to transform Conan's parents into
statues of lifeless stone. On that day Conan vowed to return
his loved ones to life, and his quest led him to far-off lands
and into contention with a myriad of fantastical adversaries.
His goal to vanquish the cruel wizard Wrath-Amon and his evil
serpent men was helped by a number of allies and by a special
sword made of star metal, which would reveal the true form of
the shapeshifting serpent men and drive them back into another
dimension.
The series ran for 64 episodes
in its first and only season, but inspired a sequel for the
1993 season titled Conan and the Young Warriors. Conan and the
Young Warriors continued where the original series left off,
but featured three new companions for Conan and a new quest. |
