Synopsis:

Scott Adams' hugely successful comic strip came to life in the animated Dilbert. Like the comic strip, the animated version focused on life in the workplace of corporate America; specifically the life of Dilbert, an engineer whose lot in life was identifiable in one form or another with the majority of working class America. The show poked fun at office politics, corporate ethics, and management's way of thinking - all the things Dilbert creator Scott Adams witnessed and lived through when he occupied middle management positions for two large corporations between 1979 and 1995.

The syndicated comic strip immediately struck a responsive chord with its audience and still appears in over 1,000 newspapers, but the animated version didn't do quite as well. The prime time series had a faithful following, but its target audience wasn't large enough to compete with shows that had a wider appeal, and the show lasted for only two seasons.

Despite the shows short run, the comic strip and the sale of Dilbert merchandise is still going strong. It isn't very popular with the kids, but adults, who can relate to the style of workplace it depicts, buy scads of desk calendars, pocket protectors and other office supplies with his picture on them. Over a dozen collections of strips have been available in both hardcover and paperback. For a while during the late 1990s, Dilbert was even the spokestoon for OfficeMax. It appears that Dilbert's popularity will continue so long as the corporate mentality and the human beings who have to work with it remain out of synch.
