This Emmy-award
winning series from comedian Jonathan Katz starred his
animated double, Dr. Jonathan Paul Katz, a psychiatrist with a
long list of celebrity clients (often comedians) who needed
the good doctor's counseling - having first waded through the
apathy of his sarcastic receptionist, Laura. Celebrity guests
on the show included such names as Ray Romano, Winona Ryder,
David Duchovny, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ben Stiller, Caroline
Rhea, Carrie Fisher, Conan O'Brien, Garry Shandling, Gilbert
Gottfried, Janeane Garofalo, Joan Rivers, Kathy Griffin, Lisa
Kudrow and Whoopi Goldberg, all of whom provided their own
voices.
Away from the office Dr. Katz was a divorced father
supporting his only son Ben, a 20-something year old bachelor
with no direction in life. Ben's often infantile and always
over-the-top antics pushed his father's professionally-learned
patience and tolerance to the limits. Ben spent a good deal of
time attempting cheesy (and utterly futile) pick-up lines on
his father's receptionist Laura.
Dr. Katz also played acoustic guitar, a hang-over from his
younger days in the Coppelmann & Katz musical duo with Sharon
Coppelmann. In his spare time he hung out at a laid-back bar
called Jacky's 33, chatting with friends Julie and Stan.
Unknown to Julie, the bartender who was studying to become a
physical therapist, Dr. Katz had a crush on her.
The series used the distinctive "SquiggleVision" animation
style in which the outline of figures are shaky and moving.
Even more distinct for the series, everything in the
background was shown in black and white.
Along with fellow cartoon hit South Park, Dr. Katz,
Professional Therapist helped put Comedy Central on the map.
Halfway through its sixth season, the network took Dr. Katz
off the air and aired some of the remaining episodes on a
Christmas marathon later that year. |
