Synopsis:

In the 60’s, Steve Reeves made Hercules a popular matinee idol with a series of films that featured the hero and his mythic exploits. Shortly afterward, Joe Oriolo (the man behind the original Felix the Cat) brought Hercules to the small screen, placing Herc in many of the same situations as the movies, and adding a few of his Greek friends.

Residing on Mount Olympus, the adventurous Hercules was warned of trouble on Earth by Dedaunus, the seer of the gods, who could view remote images by peering into his crystal rock. To retain his godly powers, which would vanish in the mortal world, Hercules wore a magic ring given to him by his father Zeus when he descended to Earth. He was regularly accompanied by Newton, a centaur who had the habit of repeating every line he said twice, and occasionally by the mortal woman Helena and a mute satyr called Tewt, who could only communicate by playing his panpipe.

The Mighty Hercules was unique because instead of updating the character like many cartoons did (i.e. Young Samson), Hercules still lived in ancient Greece and battled ancient villains, like the hooded Daedelus (and his cat Dydo), the sea hag Wilamene and her vulture-like sidekick Elvira.

Also memorable was the theme song by Johnny Nash (of "I Can See Clearly Now" fame), which celebrated the strength of Hercules in graphic detail.

Opening Lyrics:

"Hercules, hero of song and story.

Hercules, winner of ancient glory.

Fighting for the right,

Fighting with his might,

With the strength of ten, ordinary men.

Hercules, people are safe when near him.

Hercules, only the evil fear him.

Softness in his eyes,

Iron in his thighs,

Virtue in his heart,

Fire in every part,

Of the Mighty Hercules."
