Following the
successful run of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, The New
Scooby-Doo Movies was the first of many reincarnations of the
lovable talking hound. To boost the already increasing
popularity of the series, each episode of The New Scooby-Doo
Movies featured a guest star, ranging from celebrities like
Sonny and Cher and Monkees frontman Davy Jones to characters
from other Hanna-Barbara cartoons like Josie and the Pussycats
and Speed Buggy. The show's format stayed basically the same,
the most notable change being the length of each episode
extended from thirty minutes to a full hour. Scooby and the
gang still found themselves foiling the schemes of bad guys in
rubber suits and masks, but this time around the guest stars
would help out and were another source of comedic inspiration.
The new series ran for two original seasons on CBS, and had a
long life in syndication.
There has been a lot of confusion surrounding the official
titles of the episodes, due to the fact that no on-screen
titles were given for this series. Instead of a credit that
would read: "Wednesday Is Missing," a still picture was
displayed with narration by Casey Kasem stating: "Today
Scooby-Doo meets The Addams Family." This was particularly
confusing with characters like the Harlem Globetrotters and
Batman who appeared multiple times. Episodes with guests that
appeared only once were commonly referred to as "Scooby-Doo
Meets . . ."
