Synopsis:

Winner of two Emmy awards, Spawn: The Animated Series was a dark and often brutally graphic tale of the latest incarnation of the Hellspawn (or "Spawn" for short). The story was first told in the pages of the Spawn comic book series from Image Comics, beginning in 1992. Creator Todd McFarlane was already a fan favorite from his work at Marvel Comics, and when he created the Spawn series it proved to be a huge success, eventually selling hundreds of millions of copies worldwide. Spawn would also become the subject of a live-action feature film released in 1997 by New Line Cinema.

Al Simmons was a government assassin employed by the CIA before he was betrayed and burned to death by his own boss. For his sins in life, Al was sent to hell. Being completely devoted to his wife, Wanda, Al made a bargain with a demon named Malebolgia, promising anything if he could only see his beloved wife again. Malebolgia returned him to earth five years after his death, in a facsimile of the badly burned body he had when he died, but with the superhuman powers of Hellspawn. Like other Hellspawn before him, the new Spawn was to use his newfound powers in the service of hell, fighting the forces of heaven for the souls of mankind.

To Spawn's great dismay, his former wife had re-married and had a child, and although Spawn still loved her, he realized there could be no future between the two of them. His new existence was tormented with longing for the past and his inability to come to terms with the bargain that forever damned his soul - a bargain he sought to find a way out of.

It wasn't long before Spawn fell in with Count Nicholas Cogliostro, whom he met among the street derelicts that formed much of his initial supporting cast. Cogliostro (who had dealt with Hellspawn before) filled in a lot of necessary background information, such as the fact that Spawn was imbued with demonic energy, which can be very handy to have around, but when it was used up, he'd become part of Malebolgia's slave army of undead warriors and stay there for all eternity.
