Forced
to flee their home planet Thundera before its total
destruction, a small band of ThunderCats escaped to Third
Earth, where they were followed by evil Mutants from the
planet Plun-Darr.
The Mutants, led by the
reptilian S-S-Slithe, the baboonish Monkian, and Jackalman
(whose name speaks for itself), had one dastardly objective -
to obtain the Eye of Thundera, the source of the ThunderCats'
power. Also hoping to capture the eye was the centuries-old
embodiment of evil Mumm-Ra, from First Earth.
With the help of a coffin, the
decrepit Mumm-Ra could transform himself into "Mumma-Ra the
Ever Living!" When he saw his reflection, however, he would
quickly revert to his normal stage, then rush back to his
sarcophagus to try again.
The benevolent ThunderCats were
a motley crew of super felines. There was the straight-laced
leader Lion-O, who wielded the Sword of Omens ("Sword of
Omens, give me Sight Beyond Sight!"); Tygra, a bolo-slinging
architect with the ability to turn himself invisible; mechanic
Panthro, who kicked mutant tail with his nunchuks; Cheetara, a
super-speedy female with an acrobat's pole; Wilykit and
Wilykat, a pair of bomb-tossing mischievous siblings; Jaga,
the disembodied spiritual leader of the group; and Lion-O's
oddball caretaker/comic relief Snarf.
Other surviving ThunderCats were discovered during the
show's second season. The compassionate Pumyra slightly
alleviated the male-to-female ratio of Cats. Fast and agile,
she used a sling when necessary, but preferred healing;
Bengali, master blacksmith, used a hammer in battle that had
the properties of an energy pistol; and the ageing Lynx-O -
whose blindness was compensated by his other highly developed
senses - provided a dose of wisdom to the group. Snarf's
younger and more energetic nephew, Snarfer, also made the
trip, contributing his technological genius when needed.
New dangers also presented themselves, most notably: the
Lunataks - a powerful (yet typically incompetent) band of
power-seeking villains. They were led by Luna, a diminutive
strategist who was rode everywhere on the back of Amok, her
large, silent servant; Tug-Mug hailed from a high-gravity
world, and could make incredibly powerful leaps; the
cold-shouldered Chilla froze objects with her breath and
incinerated them with her hands; Alluro's club could control
others' minds; and nothing could escape the notice of Red-Eye,
whose super vision helped him throw his discus with
considerable accuracy.
One of the most popular
Rankin/Bass creations, ThunderCats ran for 130 syndicated
episodes, usually at the top of the ratings. And you can still
get a group of 80's kids' blood pumping simply by starting off
the chant...
"thunder...Thunder...THUNDER...THUNDERCATS...HOOOOOOOO!"
