Synopsis:

In the spring of 1984 Hasbro premiered a line of morphing toys called Transformers, followed up with a comic book series that summer and the syndicated cartoon, The Transformers, at the end of the year. Proving a tremendous hit with kids of all ages, the franchise - with the help of several new series and merchandising campaigns - has maintained a significant fan base to the present day.

Transformers: Armada continued the tradition set by Beast Wars Transformers (1996), Beast Machines Transformers (1999) and Transformers: Robots In Disguise (2001) of using characters from the original series, but reinventing them and their universe to create an independent storyline.

The epic struggle between the two warring factions of transforming robots - the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons continued in Transformers: Armada. As usual, the Decepticons had aspirations of universal conquest, and the Autobots did their best to prevent the Decepticons from fulfilling their ambitions. The opening sequence aptly illustrated the backdrop to the series:

"Light years ago, deep in the cosmos, a unique digital entity came into being. In search of other life forms it sent explorers out to the furthest reaches of the galaxy. These digital, mechanical beings became known as ... Transformers.

One of the first planets inhabited was soon to become known throughout time and space as Cybertron. A civil war between them (the Autobots and Decepticons) raged on, and at stake was a race of tiny bots known as Mini-Cons. Always considered "smart-tools" used to boost power, these Mini-Cons were awakened by an inner protocol. They then joined forces and resisted domination by both Autobots and Decepticons. Battle after battle proved nothing, and after many casualties the Autobots and Decepticons were caught in a deadlock. Realizing that victory would come at too high a price, the warring factions called a truce. And in this truce it was decided that an enormous craft be constructed for the Mini-Cons, who would be catapulted into space, never to be used as pawns in another galactic war again. Finally, after drifting for millions of years the Mini-Con ship collided with a moon circling a primitive planet known as Earth. The craft and cargo shattered, casting Mini-Cons to every corner of the planet. Eventually, the Earth shifted, and for millions of years the Mini-Cons lay dormant. And that's where our story begins."

The story began on Earth, when 7th grade friends Carlos and Rad inadvertently unearthed and activated one of the Mini-Con robots. Its activation alerted the other Transformers to the hitherto unknown whereabouts of the lost Mini-Cons, thus beginning a new series of battles in the age-old war, as each side raced to acquire the miniature robots (about the size of a human) which, when connected to their larger counterparts, enhanced their abilities and gave them tremendous power.

Fandom's endless appetite for the giant, transforming robots assures that Transformers: Armada won't be the last in a long line of popular and diverse Transformers titles.
