Synopsis:

Produced in Japan as "Transformers: Car Robots," Transformers: Robots In Disguise made a return to traditional cel animation after the entirely computer generated format of the previous two Transformers series - Beast Wars Transformers and Beast Machines Transformers. Robots In Disguise featured good car robots helping the human scientist Dr. Onishi fight off the evil Destolonga robots, who were out to take over the Earth.

Robots In Disguise took its cue from the original 1984 series, in that it took place on modern Earth and was a return to the use of realistic Earth vehicles in the robots' alternate forms. However, the storyline was independent of the other Transformers series and was not intended to be part of the same continuity. Eric S. Rollman, executive producer for RiD, explained that the series featured, "somewhat similar characters in a parallel dimension." Note that despite this, Hasbro instructed the RiD writers to include nods to the previous shows, and references to characters, items and events from the original series occasionally made their way into the stories.
